2000 Chunichi Cup INTERVIEW

by JGA PR Committee

ROMANIA (Women)

  • Andreea Raducan
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
It was the millenium Olympic Games, and I am satisfied with the good performances of my team and my gold medal for all-around competition.
-Was there any change in your training after the Olympics?
The training will be very difficult because we must work with the new Code of Points for the next Olympic Games. But I am trying to do my best to achieve exactly what I need for a Start Value of ten.
-Japanese fans hope to see your performance to the music "Riverdance". Will it be possible to see it today?
I am using the same music as yesterday, because I have only three tumbling passes at this moment (the routine to "Riverdance" has four passes). It will be very difficult to compose a routine to "Riverdance" now. But in the future, I am considering using "Riverdance" for my new floor exercise routine. Maybe in the future! (Actually, Raducan used "Riverdance" the next day at the exhibition in Hamamatsu, SHIZUOKA!)
  • Simona Amanar
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
For me, it was the second and the last Olympic Games, so I am satisfied with the good competition in Sydney, with the very good result for the Romanian team, and with my individual medals for all-around and floor. I am also happy to have made gymnastic history with such good results at the Olympic Games.
-If possible, we want to see your performance at the World Cup Finals...
I have qualified into two apparatus finals, vault and floor. I know that I am one of the best performers on vault and floor. I hope to perform good routines and to get good results.

RUSSIA

  • Evgueny Podogornyi
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
The Olympics was very good, but personally it was a pity that I couldn't get results I could be satisfied with.
-Japanese fans hope to see your triple back somersault on floor again. Do you still practice it?
Since I injured my ankle, I just cannot do it now.
-Will it be possible to see it in the future?
I hope so.
-What is your next goal?
I want to try not only to make the Olympic team but also to score well at Athens.
  • Iouri Tikhonovski
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
Nemov did a great job for the all-around title, but as a team, it seemed that we barely got the bronze medal even with his big contribution. China looked very strong there, and I thought we had to make much more effort to beat them.
-What is your next goal?
Since my wife is going to have a baby in a few months, I'd like to try harder for my baby. And I'd like to make the team for the next Worlds and Olympics.
  • Anastasia Kolesnikova
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I was very glad to make the team and was satisfied with the team's performance.
-What is your next goal?
I want to make the team for the next Worlds and Olympics.
  • Anna Tcheveleva
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I was very glad to make the Olympic team. I was happy to be on the Russian team.
-What is your next goal?
I'd like to try for the next next Worlds and Olympics.
-It seemed that you Russian girls and the Romanian girls had good relations with each other in the same group at the all-around finals.
Yes, we are friends, especially with Andreea. I like her very much.

UKRAINE (WOMEN)

  • Viktoria Karpenko
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
It was good on the whole. The cheering of the audience and my performance were very good. However, it was a pity that the room in the Olympic Village Apartment was so small and uncomfortable. But other than that, the Olympics was good!
-Did the discomfort in the Olympic Village affect your performance, especially in the all-around finals?
This was not the reason for the quality of my performance.
-The Romanian girls defeated you in the all-around finals in the World Championships in China and in the Olympics and you lost the title. How do you feel about this?
I don't have any special bad feeling about the Romanians. They are very good gymnasts, and have good compositions and we were beaten fairly by them. I don't have a grudge against them. They are great gymnasts.
-What are you going to do after this competition?
I have not thought so much about the future, but I'll continue training until the end of the year, and I want to think again then.
  • Olga Rochshupkina
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I'm glad to have made the Olympic team.
-How do you feel about your performance?
For me, it was good.

I want to try for the next Olympic Games.

CHINA(MEN)

  • Li Xiaopeng
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I am satisfied with my good result.
-What is your next goal?
I want to try for the next Olympics in Athenes.
-Many people want to see you competing in the all-around finals...
I would love to be in the all-around finals.
-You always don't perform on pommel horse. What is the reason?
I injured my left elbow and I have not been able to even practice on pommel horse.
  • Zhang Sheng
-What is your next goal?
I want to make the team for the next World Championships in Belgium.

KOREA(MEN)

  • Lee Joo-Hyung
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I am satisfied with my silver medal on parallel bars, and I don't regret anything about my performance. I think younger Korean gymnasts will have good results in the future.
-What is your next goal?
I couldn't perform well in this competition because I couldn't train enough after the Olympics. If I come here next year, I'll try for a better result.
-Many people liked your parallel bars routine. Do you have any message for them?
I'm sorry for today's poor performance in apparatus finals. Please cheer for the younger Korean gymnasts as well!
  • Lee Jang-Hyung
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I got nervous at my first Olympics. I had heard that Sydney had a good enviroment, and it really was so. I was very impressed. Moreover, I was glad to be in the Olympic team with my brother (Joo-Hyung) for the first time.
-What is your next goal?
I'll continue gymnastics for at least another two years, and later, I want to study at the university.

AUSTRALIA (MEN)

  • Philippe Rizzo
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
The Olympics was a good fun and good experience. I'm trying for the next one.
-What is your next goal?
It's everyone's goal to win. I wouldn't mind winning. It'll be good.
-Do you practice a new skill?
Yeah, after this competition, I will.
  • Damian Istria
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I was absolutely incredible. I can't describe the feeling I got when I walked out on the floor. It was a magical experience.
-What is your next goal?
It's probably preparing for the new Code of Points, getting ready for World Championships next year.

JAPAN (MEN)

  • Akihiro Kasamatsu
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
Since it was my first Olympics, everything was new for me, and I could do my routines boldly.
-What is your next goal?
At the World Chmapionships and Olympic Games where I made the team, I earned no medal. So, I'd like to try to get a medal.
  • Naoya Tsukahara
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I was so eager for a good result that I missed, but it was a good experience for me.
-What is your next goal?
The Code of Points will be changed next year, and it'll be very difficult for us. I'd like to adjust my routines to the new Code of Points as soon as I can, and will train harder for a good result.
-All of your fans are worried about the injury to your left wrist. How is it now?
It is much better than at the Olympics, but I have a pain around my collarbone. I'd like to restart training after I recover from it.
  • Yoshihiro Saito
-What do you think about your performance today?
It was excellent (laugh).
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I got nervous actually, but it was a good experience for me.
-How do you feel about earning the best result of the Japanese men's team at the all-around finals?
Even though I was the best in the team, it was only twelfth place. So I'd like to try for a higher ranking at the next Worlds, or Olympics.
-What do you think about Daishokai (which is the new club created after Daiwa Bank Gymnastics Club closed)?
We could not get the team title at the nationals, but we'd like to start fresh next year.

JAPAN (WOMEN)

  • Aya Manabe
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
I'd like to learn something from the top gymnasts that I saw at the Olympics, and want to try to score close to them.
  • Miho Takenaka
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
Since there were a big spread in points between myself and those at the top, I'd like to try harder to approach their scores, even if by only 0.1.
  • Naoko Nakase
-What was your impression of the Olympics?
Seeing many medal contenders missing at the Olympics, I'd like to try for an error-free performance; after all, even I have missed in some competitions.
