| The top seven men and top seven
women finishers in the trials were automatically selected for the Japanese Asian
Games team.
The women's competition took two days, and the total was considered to decide
qualification for the team. Sydney Olympian and current national champion,
Miho Takenaka, will lead the team with '99 Worlds members Aya Manabe,
Naoko Nakase and Olympic alternate Kumi Fujiwara. Veteran Yumi Osuga,
22 years old, has joined the national team for the first time. The women's team
includes young gymnasts. Ayaka Sahara, 15 years of age, who uses a triple
twisting back somersault dismount on the uneven bars. This will be a crowd
favorite in her hometown, Osaka. The only Japanese woman's all-around finalist
at the Sydney Olympics, Kana Yamawaki, withdrew from this trials.
The men's team includes some new faces of collegiate gymnasts. Hiroyuki
Tomita is the current Intercollege champion and won the trials. Takehiro
Kashima is a former national champion on pommel horse and will be a very strong
medal contender in the games. Sydney Olympian Norimasa Iwai, Akihiro Kasamatsu,
and Yoshihiro Saito will represent Japan. Two time Olympian Naoya Tsukahara
failed to make the team with two falls on pommel horse. (Tsukahara finished tenth).
