VAULT
Svetlana Khorikina of Russia threw two strong vaults to win. Having won this event in the 2001 Worlds, she looked confident in her two vaults: her 1 1/2 twisting Yurchenko was a little shaky (a big step backward), but her Khorkina II, her original vault, was nicely done with a clean landing. Also from Russia, Lydia Sidorova was strong, too, but she had a very big step forward in both vaults (1 1/2 twisting Yurchenko and Evdkimova). However, she was ahead of Romania's Andreea Munteanu, who performed a double twisting Yurchenko and a layout Tsukahara-full. Japan sent four gymnasts to the final, but they made mistakes or didn't have strong second vaults, and their scores didn't push them up to the medal position.
UNEVEN BARS
Khorkina and Irina Yarotska of Ukraine battled with a high level of difficulty.
Yarotska had missed in the all-around, but performed very solidly in the
final. She had a very good combination of el-grip Endo (el-grip Endo +
el-grip Endo with full twist + el-grip giant with full twist + piked Jaeger),
and made a clean landing on her double front from el-grip to win. Khorkina
upgraded her routine from that in the all-around competition with a one
and a half twisting giant to Khorkina, but she lost control during the
twist and stopped. However, she stuck her full-out dismount and remained
third. Romana's Oana Ban had very brisk movement during her routine, and
showed a very high full-in dismount. Her low start value kept her from
beating Khorkina. Japan's trio of gymnasts, Ishizaka, Oshima, and Sahara,
hit their routines, and Ishizaka placed forth. Oshima, who had recently
suffered from a mistake in her layout double dismount, had a very clean
landing in the final.
BEAM
Oana Ban performed a superb routine, including a full twisting layout on. She had a small balance check on that skill, but she had good rhythm during the routine with no hesitation. Khorkina followed Ban by only 0.025. She had a more difficult routine than in the all-around: ff ? layout stepout ? Rulfova, and triple twisting gainer back somersault dismount. She had no stop in each combination and gained full bonus pints and placed second. Romania's Munteanu had very good combinations and placed third. As for the Japanese gymnasts, Sahara and Oshima hit their routines, but each didn't have high enough start value to reach the medal position. Ishizaka fell after her Shushunova.
FLOOR
Munteanu performed a flawless routine with very cute choreography and strong tumbling passes (tucked full-in, whip to triple twist). She had also well-controlled dance elements, and had the best score on both days to win. Yarotska placed second with a solid performance, including double twisting layout front to tucked full twisting punch front. Ban had superb tumbling passes: double layout mount, tucked Arabian double, whip-whip to double pike, and triple twist. However, she took big steps in those passes, and finished third. Khorkina did not have a big mistake in the final, but she couldn't peform her full twisting tucked punch front after two and a half twist (actually she did only punch tucked barani). She had a lower start value than she expected and that cost her a medal. The Japanese gymnasts did their best, especially Ishizaka. She was solid in both her acrobatic series and dance elements, and placed fourth, missing a medal by only 0.05.
