| Kashima leads the men's competition after Day1. |
MEN
Takehiro Kashima (Central Sports) was steady throughout today's competition,
and got high scores on all events except for rings, his weakest event.
With these performances, he beat his scores from the first day. He changed
his composition on pommel horse, on which he won a bronze medal in the
2002 Worlds; he converted an E-combination in which he fell in the secondary
trials to a D-combination, and also changed his dismount to keep a 10 SV.
He scored 9.700, the best score of the day, on this, his favorite event.
Hiroyuki Tomita (Central Sports) the reigning champion of the NHK Cup and
nationals, upgraded his floor routine. It had been one of his weak events;
he hit the first pass (two and a half twisting back somersault + tucked
barani + double twisting back somersault) and got 0.5 bonus (E+D), but
he missed the rest of the routine. He recovered well on pommel horse and
rings, and kept his winning position in the World Team Trials.
In addition, Naoya Tsukahara (Asahi Life Insurance), the two time Olympian,
was in good shape today, and jumped up from 8th to 3rd in the Worlds Trials.
He left out his El-grip giant with full twist through handstand in El-grip
(D), which he missed in both the 2002 Nationals and the secondary trials,
but he tried instead Kollman + giant with one and a half twisting hop in
mixed grip (SE+D=0.6 bonus). He couldn't connect the two elements today,
and his SV was lower than he had planned. However, he was very satisfied
with his performances throughout the day.

| Oshima tops the women's cometition. |
WOMEN
Kyoko Oshima topped Day 1 of the NHK Cup and World Team Trials with very
clean performances except for the jump sequence on beam which she couldn't
connect. From this year, she has added a Tkachev on uneven bars to gain
more SV, and changed her floor music and movement. She led the others not
only in the competition but also in composition. The reigning national
champion, Manami Ishizaka (Asahi Life Insurance GC) was second, followed
by Ayaka Sahara (Liberal GC).
