| Tomita tops the competition after day 1 |
72 Gymnasts competed in the all around between noon and about 6 P.M. The results of the meet today would determine the order of competition tomorrow. The average of the results of the competition today and tomorrow would determine who qualified for the NHK Cup, which will determine who qualifies for the Universiade and World Championship teams. (Daisuke Nakano sat out with an injury and Naoya Tsukahara with illness.)
With ten (men's and women's) events running simultaneously and with the
length of competition and the heat.... it was difficult to stay awake.
When the competition ended, this writer could only imagine escape from
the gymnasium... and had little interest in sticking around to see how
the gymnasts placed. Rather than bore the reader with the placing of gymnasts
the reader doesn't know in a competition judged under the new system which
the reader is probably unable to make sense out of.... (what exactly does
a score of 8.95 mean under the new system as compared to an 8.95 under
the old system? Does the reader really trust the Japanese judges' objectivity
to the point that he would trust that a similar routine would score the
same in Sri Lanka or North Korea?)
I hope the reader will not mind too much if I discuss some of the skills
performed on some of the events I watched.
On floor exercise, the most interesting stunts performed were one and a
half somersault to forward roll, done in various combinations of rebound
elements, etc. Nishimura did a laid out Morisue (back somersault to half
twist to forward roll) Niijima did a Thomas, and Kuwabara did a laid out
Thomas (laid out back somersault with one and a half twist to forward roll.)
Hayami mounted with a double back with a triple twist, and dismounted with
a double back with a double twist.
On rings, Yamada did a kip to maltese and then pressed to planche.... followed
by a back roll to maltese. Tomita did a back rise to a planche, and followed
it with a back roll to maltese. It was actually a beautiful combination...
Daisuke Sato did the same combination, but not as pretty. A number of gymnasts
used the pineda (front lever to cross) and pressed it on to a maltese,
but Hayami pressed his on to an inverted cross. Both Osada and Yoshimura
did straight body straight arm press from cross to inverted cross, but
Yoshimura's was a lot prettier...Okusawa started with a back uprise to
inverted cross, and followed that with a pineda to maltese. Saito dismounted
with a piked barani out.
On vault, kasamatsu with various twists (including the Driggs) was most
common. Also fairly common was the round off to the board to back sommie
with double twist. Less common were the roche (tucked double front sommie)
and handspring piked front with double twist. Okiguchi even attempted a
lopez.... (kasamatsu with double twist.)
Parallel bars had the most interesting routines. Osada performed a welles
(piked giant swing) to a Tippelt and salt forward to overarm hang. Many
gymnasts did healy combinations, a number even from a handstand on one
bar. Hayashi did a diomidov to one bar, and followed it to a healy (Makuts).
Ito, among others, did a streuli to double tucked back sommie to overarm
hang. Nakase did a very pretty piked morisue. Mizutori did a piked and
straddled front sommie to support (Tkachev.) Ryusuke Sato did a very pretty
underbar sommie with full twist to handstand... but Fujita beat him out
with an underbar sommie with one and a quarter twist to handstand on one
bar and glide kip on the one bar!
The release moves showed more variety than usual. Kasamatsu did a very
pretty piked, straddled front sommie regrasp, but Nishimura did a laid
out front with full twist to regrasp. Dosho did a lovely straight body
(legs together) reverse hecht (Tchakev), Shiraishi did a straight body
Kolmann, and Mizutori did a straight body Kovacs... as well as a tucked
Kolmann and another high value release. Mori did a layout piatti with full
twist (backward stoop circle to instant reverse hecht, straight body with
legs together, with full twist.) From regular grip giants, Dosho swung
forward and made a full twist on one arm to swing back to eagle giants....
