Yamagishi topped with Tsurumi and Uemura.

While there were many errors from the top athletes on both days, the two reigning national champions, Miki Uemura and Koko Tsurumi, led the competition with Mai Yamagishi, who had won the all-round preliminary at the last nationals.

Tsurumi won the first day, earning a very strong score on uneven bars, but missed both vaults, and had a big balance check on her Onodi on beam. She hit her Yurchenko-full on vault on the second day, however, but fell after her layout stepout on beam. Uemura fell on uneven bars after her giant backward with 1/2 turn to el-grip on the first day but she hit all her events on the second day. She upgraded her vault to a one and a half twisting Yurchenko and she hit both attempts on the second day. She and Tsurumi tied with Yamagishi, who hit every routine on both days, to win the second trials and qualified for the NHK Cup in first place.

Two-time finalist on uneven bars at the two recent world championships, Mayu Kuroda, fell after her punch front on the first day and had some balance checks on beam on the second day. Kyoko Oshima had a nightmare on the first day; she sat dawn after her double twisting layout front on floor and tucked double front dismount on uneven bars. She, however, regained the confidence to show brilliant performances on the second day. Keiko Mukumoto, who was the alternate at the 2006 world championships and also had won the Stella Zakharova Cup this March, fell on her first event of the meet, the uneven bars; however, she hit all the other events cleanly. By contrast, Manami Ishizaka was not in good shape and had some big mistakes on both days.
